While adults of various ages have enjoyed this luxury, parents and children alike often wonder: What’s the youngest a child could start Invisalign treatment?

The Requirements for Invisalign

“There are a few necessary criteria before beginning Invisalign treatment on a child or adolescent,” notes 2017 VIP Invisalign Provider Dr. William Beam. “And of course, as each case is unique, you’ll need to meet with a qualified orthodontist for an Invisalign assessment.”

While there’s no set-in-stone age for Invisalign, the following conditions must occur before this type of treatment can take place:

  • Loss of all first (baby) teeth
  • All permanent incisors and first molars must have erupted.
  • Second and third molars (wisdom teeth) do not need to have erupted yet; Invisalign trays can allocate space for these to come in.
  • There needs to be no significant tooth decay or damage.
  • The patient must be mature enough to comply with treatment, meaning aligning trays must be worn 22 or more hours per day.

The Age for Invisalign

With this type of treatment, it’s more about conditions than age. Theoretically, a person as young as 11 or 12 years of age can seek Invisalign Teen treatment, provided they meet the criteria above. Girls will likely be eligible for Invisalign first, as they typically mature faster than boys.

“Usually, we see Invisalign Teen patients between the ages of 12 and 16,” notes Dr. Richard Battistoni, “but this can be plus or minus a few years, as each case is different.”

The patient’s mouth will need to be X-rayed to determine the position of all teeth and thus to determine how much space is needed for remaining teeth to erupt past the gum line.

There’s generally no problem waiting for all teeth to come into place before beginning treatment. As always, it’s necessary to schedule an office visit to determine how the detailed care plan will take place.  In fact, many orthodontics practices offer free consultations for Invisalign, so there’s no risk in getting assessed for this treatment. While any dentist has the ability to offer Invisalign, orthodontists have years of additional training in the mechanics of tooth movement and smile design.  We treat our Invisalign patients to the same high standards as our braces patients.

Battistoni and Beam Orthodontics even specialize in Invisalign Teen treatments. Their continuing education endeavors include Invisalign continuing education, meetings, and study clubs – including a study club dedicated to teen treatment.

They also use iTero intraoral scanning for accurate, fast digital impressions without “gooey” impression materials.
