La Grange, IL – Chances are, you’ve seen an ad for Invisalign, touting the many benefits of using it. Getting a perfectly straight and healthy smile, without metal brackets and wires, may seem too good to be true. But is it?
“Invisalign revolutionized the orthodontic world when it was introduced,” says Dr. William Beam, a La Grange orthodontist. “Many people, especially adults, may avoid seeking out orthodontic treatment due to esthetic concerns. So when Invisalign was introduced, people everywhere were wondering if it could deliver on its promises. And at this point it does.”
The clear aligners are virtually invisible, comfortable and removable. After a few days of wearing them, most patients don’t even realize they are in anymore.
When opting for Invisalign treatment, you’ll schedule an appointment with your orthodontist. At that appointment, he or she will get all the information needed to create your series of custom-made aligners. Once your aligners are ready, you’re ready to begin treatment.
Each set of aligners will be worn for about two weeks, and will move your teeth based on precise movements your orthodontist prescribes to ensure your smile is beautiful once treatment is finished. It’s important that each aligner set be worn for a minimum of 22 hours a day, and that you never move to a new set until the two weeks is up, or you’ve been advised to do so by your orthodontist.
Because the aligners are removable, it means there’s no chance of food getting stuck in the brackets or wires of your braces, and it means you don’t have to change your diet. With metal braces comes a list of foods to avoid so you don’t damage the braces. That’s not the case with Invisalign – you can enjoy all your favorite foods because you take the aligners out before you eat or drink.
And caring for your teeth is a snap. Simply remove the aligners, and brush and floss as normal – no worrying about trying to floss around wires anymore. Carry a toothbrush and toothpaste with you to brush quickly after meals and snacks while you’re out, and you’ll be set.
“We’ve been successfully treating patients with Invisalign for more than 15 years,” says Dr. Richard Battistoni. “With our experience and knowledge, and patients’ commitment to their treatment, we see excellent results that leave our patients smiling more than ever before.”
Just like with any orthodontic treatment, Invisalign requires the patient to be an active participant in treatment. Because the aligners are removable, it’s up to the patient to wear them the prescribed number of hours a day. Invisalign can only work when it is providing the movement needed to guide the teeth to their new locations, so wearing them 22 hours a day is important.
It’s also important to ensure you receive Invisalign treatment from a certified orthodontist, like Drs. Battistoni and Beam. Any dentist can become an Invisalign provider after just a one-day course. But orthodontists have the unique knowledge of tooth movement needed when forming a treatment plan.
This is also important because Invisalign on its own may not be able to properly treat more complicated cases. But in the hands of a skilled and experienced orthodontist who understands tooth movement, Invisalign can be used with other orthodontic tools to provide the most ideal smile.
